PLANETBASE CHANGELOG WINDOWS 7
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 (X64) MiniToolBox by Farbar Version: 17-06-2016 Appending is the output from the normal mode run after rebooting. The timestamp on the errors in the event log seem to be from when I ran the mini tool box in safemode, with all the boxes checked (right after I downloaded it.) Note that I ran it in normal mode at 10:15, so the errors timestamped at 9:58 are not from before my run in normal mode. Basically, though, I'm very confused and can't think of what to try next, and I'm not really sure where to go for help.
PLANETBASE CHANGELOG UPDATE
I suppose I'm a bit suspcious of microsoft update, I think I noticed a critical update mentioned in my system restore point logs somewhere around the time I observed the problem. I'm baffled and I don't know what to do next. That didn't help either though the problem was not present that long ago. I've also tried system restore, going back to a restore point several days old, the oldest I have. I'm not very familiar with virus programs, so I don't know if these were good choices or not, but that's what I've tried so far on the suspicion that such strange behavior may indicate a virus. I also downloaded something from Mircorsoft called msert.exe (also in safemode) and it didn't find anything with a scan either. Malwarebytes found a few Potentially Unwanted Programs, which I quarantined, but that didn't help. I've tried a few virus scans - malwarbytes, (downloaded and run in safemode was one). I set the options for firefox to always ask what to do with a downloaded file, but it never asks me anything. Neither firefox nor internet explorer will download files in normal mode. I can navigate to my download directory from my browser (firefox) through options, though. The same browser does show the arrow in safemode. I noticed that the icon that usually takes me to my download folder, an arrow, disappeard from my browser. There were no hardware changes before the problem, which occured suddenly with no obvious cause. Hardware is a Gateway dx4860 with some upgrades. OS is windows 7 home premium, service pack 1, OEM version. I think I spotted files in the cache after an attempted download, but I couldn't swear to it.
Basically, I click on a download link and nothing seems to happen, though I notice some graphical artifacts that make me suspect the file might be going somewhere. In safemode, things work normally, in non-safemode I do not get a file, nor do I get the dialog as to where to save the file.
This is done by holding down the f8 key when I boot the computer. I have a problem where I can only download files from the internet after booting up in safemode (with network support). I hope this is the right place to post this.
